Transcript from the video: The Rainforest Resource and Development Centre is an independent organisation based in the Cross River State Nigeria. It seeks to protect, preserve and conserve the rainforest through the promotion of.....action orientated programmes....environmental education workshops.....media campaigns....lobbying and peaceful direct action. Nigeria has lost over 90% of her rainforest the Okuni rainforest is home to the western lowland gorilla, drill monkey,chimps, elephants, butterflies and plants containing anti HIV agents. WEMPCO commenced construction of its factory in Ikom, Cross River State withoutplanning permission or environmental impact assessment. WEMPCO have a record of logging outside concession areas and felling unapproved species and undersized trees. WEMPCO also known as OMOWOOD and WEMPCO Agro-Forestry Project. WEMPCO now uses local loggers to extract timber from community forest in flagrant disregard of the Cross River State policy for sustainable development, conservation and management of the forest. WEMPCO sponsored an association of cheifs to take out a paid advertisement in the Nigeria Chronicle September 13 1995 confirming their support for Wempco. Companies given forest concessions for commercial logging operations in Cross River State include: Union Forest Industries.......Kisari.......Mike's Plant Nigeria......Bollex......Ikobi Brothers.....Farmosa Industries. At the current rate of forest depletion Cross River's rainforest could be completely cleared by 2014. Odey Oyama now runs the Rainforest Resource and Development Centre, a voluntary independant non profit organisation who's mission is to protect, preserve and conserve Cross River's rainforests and their resources.
